The 7th virus is egocentrism. Egocentrism is a strain which has several mutations and, in the future, I’ll talk about another one of these mutations.
Egocentrism is very much linked to the uplines. Uplines are people who have the organization and have downlines. A new person rarely suffers from this new virus. Not to say that they can not suffer from it, but it is much more rare.
What do uplines do? One typical thing for uplines, sponsors, is that when they start to succeed they contract this virus. I’ve seen it happen many times. It’s horrible. And what does the upline say? “I’m the one that got the results, I’m the one with the big pay check, so I know best”. I do not know if you ever heard it, I have, but thank God it was not from my sponsor. So “I know what’s best because I have the big check” and if I try to give an opinion because I have a different opinion , no one hears because it I don’t not have the check and the one with the check is who knows.
So this is the egocentric virus, everything will spin around that person, that upline that has success. This, to me, is not very serious and personally, easily fixable. And what that upline thinks is “everyone serves me.” This is hard for me to understand.
How do you succeed thinking that way consistently? I bring many people into the business because they want to have a big check and make lots of money, not to help them or solve their problems or anything. Am I supposed to make money together with my organization, to have a great organization and a big check. You hear a lot of “already have many people working for you?” when you work in network marketing. And it just shows that it’s common to think that our downlines work for us, that eventually we spend our time doing nothing and our downlines are the ones who do everything. No. This is egocentrism, we’re looking at our own stomachs and I’ll tell you that this virus can destroy your business. It may take 1 year, 2, 3, 4, 5, but when you think you’re close to achieving financial independence you are actually in ruin.
Because this virus of egocentrism has a side that is very negative which is, in network marketing,
the downlines tend to imitate the upline, copy what we do, our attitude, our mentality and we do not want to have is an organization full of egocentrics.
That’s what you do not want, and if it is not what you want, you must be the first to kill this virus.
And what is the vaccine? Generosity. And that means, first of all, is to be teachable. Respect the work that our uplines does with us, that our downlines are doing and learn from each other. This is what it means to be teachable. And by thanking someone who gave us something we are being as generous as when we give things, because we are allowing the person to give.
So generosity is not only to give, but also to serve the downlines, in other words, it’s working for them because, if I help, obviously my business will grow. But my focus can not be my stomach, it has to be the needs of downlines and my organization.
That’s how to be generous, to give, help, assist.
But let’s also let yourself be helped, let yourself be tought and supported especially when it is from a downline. One of the things that gives me greatest pleasure is asking for help from someone in my organization to help me or teach me something. I know this is also part of my job, to be generous and let others be generous with me. It is the way to mastering this virus of egocentricity, and it creates very strong bonds in an organization’s marketing network and makes you reach your long-term objectives. You create an organization that never ends because, as I saidbefore, your downlines copy what you do.
